A few months ago, I purchased some plain metal headbands to craft with. I wanted to have them on hand for making things like...well, like the headband I'm sharing today! It's quick and versatile, doesn't slip like elastic headbands, and you can make it to coordinate with two outfits!
Here's what you need:
Plain headband
Felt in two colors
Embroidery floss
From each color of felt, cut a strip that is 12 inches long by about double the width of your headband. The headband I used was about .25" wide, so my strips were about .5" wide.
If you don't have felt that is long enough, or if you want the felt covering to go a little longer and closer to your ears, you can piece strips together. Just be sure to stitch down the overlap really well.
Hold the two strips together and stitch along the edges with running stitch, creating a casing.
Slide the headband into the casing, with whichever side out you want to show first.
If you overlapped two pieces to extend the strips, you may need to work it in more, avoiding the flap inside. OR just insert the headband from the the other side!
Enjoy your new headband! The exposed metal ends haven't bothered me much on this, but you can wrap them with ribbon, which might be a good idea if you're making this for a child. We don't want any heads or ears scraped!
My next venture in headbands like this will definitely involve adding more cute. Maybe some stitched leaves perhaps...?
